Whether or not Joyce was a Catholic in a traditional sense, his work strongly reflects the influence of the people, tenets and rituals of his young life in the Church. Here Lowe-Evans (English, U. of West Florida) examines this influence within the framework of the modernist crisis in Catholicism, establishing Joyce as a central figure. She does not examine Joyce as a proponent of the real Church or the Church of any imagination; instead she traces Joyce's choices as he reconfigured his own early self and represented the Church. She describes Joyce's early life in faith, the role of the Virgin in his relationship with his earthly mother, his understanding of sin in his life and work, the tension between his faith and his assumed ambivalence, and how Mary Flannery underwrote James Augusta. The result is a significant contribution to critical method as well as to Joyce studies. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
