Luke examines the connection between manhood and the exploitation of animals. He first challenges the idea that there is a "natural empathic barrier between species," describing the human sympathetic connection with other animals. He then argues against the idea that humanity has a predatory nature and considers the sexuality of men's hunting and how the institutions of sacrifice and vivisection (seen as a sacrificial ritual) contribute to men's social status as the "primary generators of human life." He ends with a section on the ethics and politics of animal liberation. Luke is a former professor of philosophy at the U. of Dayton and is currently a student at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Ohio.
