Rather than attempt a comprehensive summary of the relatively new field of religion and film, editor Lyden (religion, Dana College) has chosen the 26 chapters of this anthology in order to highlight some of the more significant ideas and ways of approaching the subject. He organized the contributions into four sections focused individually on the history of the interaction between religion and film from 1895 to the present; depictions of and by practitioners of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and other religions in film; feminist, audience reception, cultural theory, psychoanalytic, and theological approaches to the study of religion and film; and categories applicable to religious and film studies, e.g. narrative, redemption, apocalyptic, heroes and superheroes, horror and the demonic, Jesus and Christ-figures, iconography, sacrifice, and ethics.
