The first edition of this singular work was published in 1976; this fourth edition updates the 2004 edition. Written for medical practitioners and medical students, this text discusses diseases found on the continent as well as issues pertaining to society, culture, poverty, and inequality that clinicians must learn to understand and deal with in sub-Saharan Africa. The first chapters address the people and the environment, food and nutrition, refugees and disasters, and managing a health service (finances, and drug supply). Seventy-nine contributions address mother and child health; bacterial and viral infections; protozoal, helminth, and fungal infections; non-communicable diseases; and diseases of body systems. A few chapters are devoted to cancer and palliative care, and to venoms and poisons. The five editors are affiliated as follows: David Mabey, Geoffrey Gill, Sir Eldryd Parry, and Christopher J.M. Whitty (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK); and Martin W. Weber (World Health Organization, Jakarta, Indonesia). Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
