MacClancy (social anthropology, Oxford Brookes U., UK) explores the cultural dimensions of nationalism--the everyday kinds of nationalism, as opposed to the official versions promoted by ideologues and party leaders--in an examination of Basque identities in the modern world. Through analysis of topics such as football clubs, cuisine, art, and graffiti, the author identifies a number of themes in Basque nationalism including the importance of landscape and the masculine bias that underlies much of Basque nationalist representation. He also discusses the tendency for anthropologists and their work to be used for nationalistic purposes in the representation of the Basque people, through their genes, their art and their museums. Sections of seven of the text's eight chapters have been previously published in other publications between 1993 and 2007. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
