Machácek (Medieval Archaeology, Masaryk University) examines archaeological evidence from important early medieval centers in order to understand the transformation that took place across the European continent during the second half of the first millennium. The author focuses on Pohansko near Breclav in the present-day Czech Republic, which is perhaps the best studied site of its kind in the entire region. Machácek attempts to use a number of proven methodological tools used in western archaeology since the 1970s to examine new questions related to a cognitive approach to archaeology and the positivist tradition of Central European archaeology.
