Archaeologists describe excavations and the analysis of data from a possible pre-Clovis, Paleoamerican site, roughly a period from 75,000 to 10,400 years before the present, located in southern New Mexico. The report is the latest of five that investigate the timing and processes that led to the beginning of farming and the transition of prehistoric cultural systems from the late Archaic to the early Formative periods in the American Southwest. Paleoecology is considered from such perspectives as soils and sediments, vertebrate fauna, and isotopic studies of changing environments and climates. Then evidence about human occupation is presented, including the source of carbonate lithic artifacts, worked bone, and friction-skin imprints and hair.
