Arguably the intellectual leader of the revolution, Madison served not only as President of the young republic but also as Secretary of State, among other posts in a long and distinguished career. In this collection of letters, many of which appear as abstracts, we find evidence that the later portion of the Jefferson presidency was not all Madison (and Jefferson) had hoped it would be, and that Madison had to struggle with negotiations over West Florida, the Spanish ratification of the Convention of 1802, and the long and wearisome series of maritime disputes with Great Britain. We find warnings from Madison's informants, missives from his chief clerk about overwork, and long inked worries about who would be appointed to govern the Territory of Orleans. The result is a fascinating look at a nation that was learning as it went along. Includes previously unpublished material dated prior to September 1804.
