The third edition was published in 1997; this fourth edition adds 349 profiles, bringing the total to 2,408. All retained entries have been updated with regard to biographical data, listings of principal works, secondary bibliography, and timeliness of the text (especially for living authors who might have new works). The alphabetically arranged, signed profiles average 1,200 words in length and cover biographical information as well as significant characteristics of style and content. Entries in this new edition include several interesting new features: the author's nationality and primary genre(s), the author's ethnicity and other identities (where relevant), and phonetic pronunciation for unusual names. Coverage includes most of the authors whose titles are covered in various Masterplots series, including Masterplots, rev. 2nd ed. (1996), for which this work is a companion.
