Central to this autobiography, Holocaust survivor Simon Malkes relates the story of a Nazi officer's role in saving Malkes, his family and a large number of other Jews from extermination. Malkes was born in 1930 in Wilno (or Vilnus or Vilnius) in Lithuania. He was the only son of a prosperous family and his early childhood was happy. His father, Abram, was a successful businessman. Malkes outlines his family's experience leading up to World War II, the establishment of a Jewish ghetto in Wilno and the genocide that took place there. After the Nazis built ghetto walls, Malkes and his family, along with a few hundred other Jews, were lucky to become indentured to work in a factory repairing Nazi military vehicles. Their supervisor, Wehrmacht officer Karl Plagge, not only insisted that his workers be treated well. He helped many of them escape the country.
