Authors Mallick (economics, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata) and Marjit (director and Reserve Bank of India professor, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata) examine the relationship of banking and economic development. A narrative history, the book notes that to understand financial intermediation, western theoretical models must be complemented with institutional narratives of banking in developing economies. The authors chose a bank in a less developed economy and examine more than 50 years of its balance sheet data. They also trace the bank's growth, case studies of borrowers, an analysis of intermediary organization and financial structure, and reviews of banking policies. It also suggests methodology to understand the financial history of less developed economies. There is no subject index. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
