The Society called a workshop for January 2008 in the Netherlands to address concerns by the scientific and regulatory communities that the current risk assessment scheme for plant protection products in the European Union may not provide adequate protection for aquatic macrophytes--photosynthetic plants large enough to see with the naked eye. Biological scientists from academia, governments, and industry developed guidance, recommendations, and a proposed decision scheme for additional aquatic macrophyte tests. Those are presented here, along with background papers on regulatory issues concerning effects of pesticides on aquatic macrophytes and characterizing and assessing risk using case studies, reports of workgroups and follow-up investigations, and keynote presentations. Among the keynote topics are agricultural landscapes, critically evaluating laboratory and field testing methods, and stakeholder opinion on current approaches.
