The papers presented here grew from a colloquium held in Washington D.C. in May of 2005. Marcus (museum of anthropology, University of Michigan) and Sabloff (University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology) asked ten scholars to report on their work on ancient cities in Europe, China, India, Africa, South America and Mexico. Two other articles discuss theories of the development of cities and another two give evaluations of the ten reports. The results indicate that few generalizations can be made about how cities form. Some were religious centers, some central points of trade, for example. Some were walled and the walls could be for defense or delineation. The decline of cities was also explored, with similar variations. It could have been caused by conquest and depopulation, climate change, overuse of the local resources among other factors. However, most appear to have had a heterogeneous population and some sort of governmental hierarchy offering services to attract a population from the countryside and even distant lands. This is an excellent multi-cultural overview of the creation of extra-familial communities that has much to teach us about the management of cities today.
