This workbook-text with perforated pages is intended as a supplement for undergraduate and graduate courses in reading diagnosis and reading methods, and for in-service courses in reading and literacy development at the elementary level. Each chapter briefly explains major concepts, then provides examples and guided practice for administering, scoring, and interpreting reading assessments. A final chapter on grouping calls for synthesis of the information covered throughout the book. Coverage conforms to the five reading areas proposed by the National Reading Panel Report: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The book stresses the use of informal assessment techniques, but also includes the use of standardized test scores. About 15 pages of forms and direction for activities are included. This fifth edition contains a new chapter on assessing emergent literacy, plus new activities, updated information on identifying struggling readers, and a companion web site. Mariotti and Homan teach literacy at the University of South Florida. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
