Written for students in introductory theology courses, as well as any interested reader, this accessible 2-volume handbook presents basic theological principles and the biographies and thought of key figures from the Early Christian era to the present. The entries are arranged alphabetically within chronological periods, with those figures from the Enlightenment through the present in Volume Two. Care was taken to select figures who are important in the different perspectives of black theology, liberal theology, evangelicalism, Catholicism, and feminist theology, with longer articles devoted to the most influential, such as John Calvin. Each entry concludes with a list of references and each volume includes a timeline and a glossary. Individual entries are included for the Reformation, black theology, process theology, and Vatican II. A sampling of the thinkers selected for the 20th-21st centuries include Dietrich Bonhoeffer, James Cone, Hans Frei, Rosemary Radford Ruether, and Keith Ward. The contributors are theologians and doctoral students in the US, the UK, and Australia. Markham is dean and president of Virginia Theological Seminary.
