Marks, special collections cataloguer at the Drew U. Library, and Porter (classics, English, and music, Skidmore College) examine the previously unknown friendship of Willa Cather and artists Earl and Achsah Brewster. After a biographical sketch of the Brewsters that also discusses their art, travels, circle of friends, and intellectual and spiritual ideas, they recount how the friendship began in the early 1900s, in addition to the impact of the Brewsters on Cather's writing. The second half of the book contains a checklist of materials in the Brewster Archive at Drew U.; a list of Cather books owned by the Brewsters and letters in the archive; an essay Earl Brewster wrote about Cather; and excerpts from letters and memoirs that have recently become available. The book began when the Drew U. Library acquired a small archive of books and letters in 2002 that were previously in the possession of the Brewsters' granddaughter.
