In this collection of essays, educators and practitioners ask readers to put families at the center of the school. The first part of the book analyzes portrayals of families in the media, in award-winning young adult literature of the past three years, and in discourses of teachers' professional development. Some topics discussed include how teachers' identities are shaped by their own family stories, and the exclusion of the experiences of children in foster care. The second section presents essays by researchers who are working in collaboration with families and teachers to design programs with the success of all children in mind. They debunk common myths about the urban family, and showcase the voices of parents from all ethnicities and socio-economic levels. Chapter reflection questions are included. Marsh teaches education at DeSales University. Turner-Vorbeck teaches education at Purdue University. They are co-founders of the Family Diversity Education Council.
