Martin (honorary, archeology, U. College London) publishes demotic texts that provide information on the Memphite necropolis during the Late and Ptolemaic Periods from two significance Ptolemaic archives of papyri belonging to the funerary workers of the necropolis: the God's Seal-bearers' Archive and the Choachytes' Archive. Most of them were taken to Europe by an Armenian merchant during the 19th century, and ended up scattered among many museums across Europe. Introductory chapters look at the papyri and the priests, the dramatis personae, the topography of the Memphite Necropolis, tombs and other building, and income and revenue. Then the nine texts are presented, translated, and analyzed. End matter includes an appendix of Demotic legal papyri, and extensive Demotic and Greek indices, but no index of topics in English. The second, slender volume contains high quality reproductions of the papyri themselves. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
