Martin accompanied her husband Samuel Berenberg when he was hired to be the physician for St. Paul, one of Alaska's Pribilof Islands, and there encountered Aleut people who had endured serfdom for ever a century, first from the Russian-American Company and then by US companies and government agencies to harvest fur seals. Less than a year later, Japanese attacks forced evacuation of the islands to southeastern Alaska, and she began the manuscript The Wind is No River revealing the people's plight. Published here for the first time, it combines personal experiences with history, details of seal life, botany, social life of the Aleuts, photographs, and other matters.
