A corporate attorney and part-time political science instructor in Georgia, Martinez examines the role of Major Lewis Merrill, a career soldier who led the US government's Reconstruction-era investigation into the South Carolina Ku Klux Klan. In compiling evidence for the Klan trials and restoring a measure of law and order, he says, Merill and the cavalrymen he commanded probably did more than any other entity to undermine the Klan's portrayal as a chivalric organization and expose it as a group of hooded, brutish, homegrown terrorists. He deals only briefly with the new Klan, formed in 1915. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
