The Albigensian Crusade of the early thirteenth century was the first time a pope had offered remission of sins to Western Christians if they would take up arms against heretics in their own lands. Most of the studies of this episode focus on the religious and social aspects of the resulting war. Marvin, (history, Berry College, Georgia) treats the crusade from a military and political point of view. Without ignoring the religious motives of the participants, he concentrates on the actual movement of troops, the logistics of sieges and battles and the methods of fighting. In this he adds a perspective that grounds the story of the Cathar heretics of Southern France and their supporters and opponents. Many scholars have concluded that the only winner in this struggle was the French crown which eventually assumed control of the territory. Marvin goes beyond the current idea of the crusade as a war of northern aggression, suggesting that, politics and faith aside; it was the charismatic leadership of Simon de Montfort that directed the crusade. This is a valuable addition to the recent scholarly work on medieval Occitania. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
