This work provides supplementary material for an advanced high school or first-year university course in calculus of a single variable. It presents counter-examples to the erroneous 'conjectures' that beginning calculus students often make and urges students to construct their own counter-examples. The first two chapters, written for instructions, explore pedagogical aspects of working with counter-examples. The next chapter consists of incorrect mathematical statements. Some of the false statements are converses of famous theorems, some are created by omitting or changing conditions of the theorems, and some are incorrect definitions. Using information given in the book, students create their own counter-examples to disprove the false statements. Illustrated solutions and discussion questions are provided. There is no subject index. Mason is affiliated with the Open University, UK. Klymchuk is affiliated with Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand.
