A prodigious writer about animals, Masson profiles 81 creatures, or groups of them (bats, pinnipeds), in text and color photographs. His writing style is informal and heavy with his personal experiences and opinions. Among his subjects are such exotics as Bengal tigers, large and small crabs, emperor penguins, giant squid, kookaburras, meerkats, pronghorn, and wandering albatrosses. He is also, however, intrigued by the likes of butterflies, chickens, cows, honeybees, pigs, rats, and sheep, and provided new and interesting information about even the most mundane.
