Gerontological Nursing is a comprehensive text with a holistic and interdisciplinary approach. Mauk (nursing, Valparaiso University) and her contributors aim to provide a baccalaureate-level gerontological nursing text that gives the knowledge and recommended competencies to promote quality care to the elderly. It is also appropriate for graduate level coursework, and supports curriculum development and provides course content as well. The book adheres to the framework of Core Competencies of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing. This updated third edition has 28 chapters and eight additional eChapters. New to the text are 16 chapters that include polypharmacy, delirium, culture and spirituality, elder abuse, pain management, sleep disorders, pressure ulcers, among others. The chapters are divided into eight units: foundations for gerontological nursing; communication and assessment; health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention; illness and disease management; management of geriatric syndromes; leadership and responsibility; gerontological care issues; and eChapters. There is a glossary, contributors, reviewers, and references at the end of each chapter. Included are helpful boxes?resource list, critical thinking exercises, recommended readings, personal reflections--and a multitude of tables, and figures supporting the text.
