McDowell (human geography, U. of Oxford) combines case studies and ethnographies from the past two decades with a synthesis of her own work to explore who does what in the service industry, and where, with whom, for whom, and to whom. She is particularly attentive to the social division of labor in which class, gender, and ethnicity as well as age, looks, and weight are key factors in who gets what work. The arenas she considers are those in which workers and clients or customers are present and the exchange has been completed by the time they part.
