McElvain (commander, Sheriff's Department--Perris Station, Riverside County, California) analyze police shootings by officers of his own Riverside County Sheriff's Department over 15 years in terms of citizen behaviors prior to the use of deadly force, using officer reports and drug and alcohol test data. He finds that drug and alcohol intoxication and prior violent criminal activity are far more important as explanatory variables for officer-involved shootings than officer characteristics of race, gender, or age. He also finds a consistent correlation between drug intoxication and violent criminal behavior. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
