Investigating the origins of Indonesia's New Order historical orthodoxy, McGregor (Southeast Asian history, U. of Melbourne, Australia) repeatedly came across one name: Nugroho Notosusanto, who worked for the Indonesian military as the Head of the Armed Forces History Center. It was Nugroho that first authored the account of the 1965 failed coup attempt that placed the blame on the Indonesian Communist Party, which served as a justification for General Suharto's successful coup and subsequent massacres of communists and other Indonesian leftists. By reconstructing Nugroho's biography, she shows the centrality of the Indonesian military in defining the country's past and (by extension) the proper political role of the Indonesian generals in the present.
