The need for revenge is the driving force in much of Classical Greek literature. McHardy (classical civilization, Roehamption University) compares classical myths with historical data to determine the nature revenge took in Athens. She divides motives for revenge by offense: homicide, rape or insults to women, theft and destruction of property and personal insults. Her conclusions are that men were more willing to negotiate a settlement over murder than other crimes and most likely to seek revenge for crimes against their women. She also believes that revenge was not obligatory in the society but could be decided by the individual according to circumstances. Distributed by International Publishers Marketing.
