In early July of 1917, mobs of whites rampaged through downtown East St. Louis in one of the worst race riots in American history. By the time the riots were over dozens of black people had been killed and thousands more were forced to flee their homes. In this book, McLaughlin (American studies, U. of East Anglia, UK) explores the causes of the riots, examines what influence the character of the city had upon the riots, and the ways black people attempted to defend themselves. The causes of the riots are located in the city's industrial conflicts, structures of political power, and dominant assumptions of popular culture. White aggression was stymied in those neighborhoods where armed black residents mobilized resistance; mobilizations rooted in the culture and institutions of the local black community.
