Economists from Europe and North America report the main results of the Global Development Network's global research project Explaining Growth. The first chapter summarizes the first phase of the project, which analyzed various determinants of long-term growth in seven regions of the world. These provided a background and framework for the second phase, which involved case studies of 53 developing countries and 25 transition economies analyzing the main factors facilitating or inhibiting the country's long-run growth over the last 20-50 years, or the country's growth during transition. These are discussed here in chapters covering the original seven regions: East Asia, South Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Commonwealth of Independent States. A final chapter looks at the role of substitutes for the fundamentals in the diversity of growth experiences. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
