Each volume is devoted to a separate geographical area, then subdivided into regions. A lengthy introductory section for each region presents articles on its history and geography, story of its original inhabitants, first contact by Europeans, and specific features found throughout the region, such as rock art. These introductory articles are followed by the articles on the region's archaeological sites, listed alphabetically. The articles are written by archaeologists and are both authoritative and accessible, with detailed discussion of the history of the site and its study, with bibliography and information about public access and use provided for each. The volumes are well-illustrated with b&w plates of photos, drawings, and maps.
