The frequent crises and mutual hostility that characterized the British government's relationship with the Arab nationalist government of Egyptian President Nasser were paradoxically based on some significant similarities shared by the two governments, argues McNamara (history, National U. of Ireland). He suggests that both Nasser and successive British governments had expansive regional ambitions (not necessarily reflecting their real strengths) that made conflict inevitable. These regional ambitions were based on similar geopolitical self-images. In Churchill's formulation, Britain stood at the center of three circles consisting the British Commonwealth/Empire, the English-speaking alliance, and Europe, just as Nasser declared that Egypt stood at the center of the Arab, African, and Islamic worlds.
