Designed to improve reading and thinking skills through brief instruction and multiple-choice exercises, this text teaches students as they work, with some of the exercises introducing new material on various skills. Part I introduces basics of academic writing, vocabulary, critical reading, and evaluating electronic sources. Part II contains 36 readings organized in chapters on 12 different academic disciplines and career areas. Each of these chapters contains three readings varying in length (about 2-6 pages) and difficulty, accompanied by pre-reading questions, margin definitions, multiple-choice exercises, writing assignments, and other learning activities to parallel the skills covered in Part I. This fourth edition contains eight new readings on high interest topics like video games, online dating, and stem cell research. Part III, new to this edition, is a complete chapter from a psychology textbook. Also new to this edition is an orientation to studying, with tips on learning technical and specialized language, electronic communication with classmates, using information sources, and avoiding plagiarism. The book's four-color layout features color photos, graphic organizers, maps, charts, and diagrams. McWhorter is affiliated with Niagara County Community College.
