Ten years after the previous (second) edition of this work, and 20 since the first was published in 1987, the third edition offers thorough revision of the book's 20 chapters. The audience encompasses two groups: mental health professionals who perform psychological evaluations for the courts, and lawyers and judges. Coverage includes issues pertaining to a wide range of contexts: insanity and competence determinations; sentencing and civil commitment proceedings; probate and guardianship hearings; personal injury, workers' compensation, and Social Security claims; juvenile delinquency and status offense adjudications; custody and neglect disputes; and federal discrimination claims and educational "mainstreaming" issues. The authors all have deep experience in the field: four are affiliated with the U. of South Florida, and the other two with Clemson U. and Sam Houston State U. They summarize the legal issues, analyze the law's approach critically, and offer references to research on each topic. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
