It has been performed in parks, palaces and under the marble arches of great theaters, but Hamlet creates challenges in staging wherever it goes. Menzer (Shakespeare and Renaissance literature in performance, Mary Baldwin College) takes a unique approach to the three earliest texts and their staging, analyzing the First Quarto (1603), Second Quarto (1604-5)and First Folio (1623), arguing that the latter represents an anthology of changes designed for print rather than performance. He rejects the idea that the Folio was a memorial reconstruction by a single player or group and argues there was a separate project entirely, which was to present a version for print that companies could use as a reference. To prove his point he describes practical issues of playhouses in early modern London, how acting companies operated, and what actors and directors needed both backstage and onstage. The result is a new and much-needed method of analysis. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
