Merani, Maurizio Casoni (both U. of Modena and Reggio, Italy), and Walter Cerroni (U. of Bologna, Italy) have collaborated to prepare a textbook for a one-semester undergraduate or first-year graduate course complemented by a laboratory course in either electrical engineering or computer science departments. They assume no background in probability theory, statistics or stochastic processes. After setting out the basic concepts and terminology, they explain the technologies, protocols, and devices adopted in contemporary networks. In order to help build competence in all areas, they guide readers through real-world problems. Most of the examples use open-source software networking tools so starving students can practice the drills without coughing up an arm and a leg.
