Merrell (school psychology, U. of Oregon) presents a guide for school counselors and psychologists, social workers, special education consultants and teachers, mental health specialists, and other support service professionals in assessing and treating depression, anxiety, and related internalizing problems in school settings. Specific intervention techniques are given, with emphasis on those that are evidence-based, broadly applicable, and easy to implement. They consist of cognitive and behavioral treatment techniques, interpersonal therapy, emotional education, interpersonal problem solving and conflict resolution, social skills training, systematic desensitization, modeling, reinforcement, and others. Scripted treatment packages are not provided. The introductory chapters describe how the problems manifest, develop, and are maintained. Making referrals is also discussed. This edition has been revised and expanded, with special revision of psychiatric medications and a new chapter on prevention-oriented social and emotional learning curricula for the classroom. It also features the three-tiered public health approach more prominently. Reproducible worksheets are included. Separate author and subject indexes are provided.
