This study focuses on the public correspondence of reclusive poet Emily Dickinson which she circulated among her friends and family. Messmer points out that while Dickinson's poems were never formally completed and published, her letters left her desk as fair copies. She further contends that correspondence, rather than poetry, was Dickinson's central form of expression. Messmer teaches at the Research Center on the Internationality of National Literatures in G÷ttingen, Germany. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
