Noting a dearth of literature for training language interpreters Rudvin (foreign languages and literature, U. of Bologna) and Tomassini (science of linguistic mediation, Fondazione Universitaria San Pellegrino) wrote this book to fill that gap and connect learning contexts between public institutional settings and otherwise private business situations. Their inclusion of business situations aims to create more economically valuable interpreters and is based on the pedagogic advantage of students, by their estimation, usually being more familiar with business terms than medical or legal terms in their second languages. The book is divided into two parts, one theoretical and the other practical, and each of the six chapters is organized in numerical sections. The first three chapters covers theoretical issues and classification in interpreting; communicating in cross-cultural communities and institutional hierarchies; and comprehensive modules on communicating in business, legal and medical contexts. The latter three chapters offers practical guides in putting together courses, describing what skills students should have by the time they complete a course, and addressing concrete communication issues from a pedagogic point of view. The last chapter is all specially written dialogues, in Italian and English, but which the authors argue can be used in other languages. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
