Most readings of the Gospel of Luke find Jesus admonishing his wealthy followers to practice generosity and justice, in line with practices common in Roman Palestine, but Metzger (religion, Luther College, Iowa) says a much more radical reading is possible. He argues that Jesus declares divestiture of all private property to be the only road to salvation. The study began as his Ph.D. dissertation at Vanderbilt University.
