Using the experimental modern Arabic novel of writers from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria as a comparative case study by which to interrogate the Western notion of modernism, Meyer (Siena Heights U.) challenges theorists who frame this body of literature according to Western ideas. After identifying general features of literary modernism, the author shifts his focus to a tradition in which the novel has never been the preeminent literary form and one which typically reacts against the prevailing ideology. He explores the themes of modernist ambivalence, recovering the past, rediscovering the present (e.g., the Lebanese Civil War), and redefining the future. Includes Arabic transliteration symbols, and lists of the 126 writers and critics he discusses. Based on dissertation research in the Levant and US in the 1990s. Annotation c.
