Having written extensively about Latin studies of Chinese philosophy and translations of its documents, Meynard here considers the Jesuit translation and commentary of the Lunyu "Analects," the most important work in the philosophy of Confucius (551-479 BC). He looks at the different stages of the redaction, first focusing on the role of the Jesuits as translators, then examining the reasons underlying their choice with regard to the commentaries they adopted for their translation. He also shows how the Jesuits interwove different Chinese interpretations of the same text, and discusses the innovative editorial decisions that the Jesuits had to make in order to arrange the different layers of the text given the formidable challenges of translating the Confucian classics with their Chinese commentaries for Western readers.
