Mickens (Clark Atlanta University) explains strategies for calculating approximations to periodic solutions of truly nonlinear (TNL) oscillator differential equations. The basic style and presentation of the book is heuristic rather than rigorous, and the calculation basis of each method is clarified by applying it to a set of standard TNL oscillator equations. This allows a direct comparison to be made among the various methods. After background and general comments, chapters cover establishing periodicity, harmonic balance, parameter expansions, iteration methods, and averaging methods. The final chapter compares results from six TNL oscillator equations. Nine appendices (about 40 pages) give background on mathematical relations, gamma and beta functions, Fourier series, basic theorems of the theory of second-order and linear second-order differential equations, perturbation methods, and discrete models of two TNL oscillations.
