This volume traces the history of musical theater from 1900 to the present. Miller attempts to "right some of the wrong" assumptions people have made about the quality of the genre and considers individual musicals in the context of other works. The book is arranged chronologically by decade and by the show's creation or first performance date. In addition, others besides Broadway shows are described, and some lesser-known ones and musicals by and about minorities are included, while some classics that the author argues did not make a contribution to the evolution of the genre are omitted, such as Brigadoon and The Sound of Music. There is no bibliography. Miller, founder and artistic director of New Line Theatre in St. Louis, is the author of other books on the topic.
