The last book in the series, this volume collects 46 translated texts by Central and Southeast European authors on anti-modernism. The book is organized by thematic, regional, and chronological principles, focusing on the period of 1880-1945. Beginning with the early phase of anti-modernist discourse, usually linked to the rise of radical ethno-nationalism and the nationalist turn of conservatism in the region, the book presents texts from the post-World War I period that involve disorientation and discontinuity with the pre-war decades. Also included are texts that attempt to offer a way out of the spiritual and institutional crisis by presenting an anti-modernist solution to redefine national character in metaphysical terms. In addition there are texts aimed to reposition conservatism in the interwar context and texts that offer a fascist revolution as a solution to the political and identity crisis of their national community. Each text includes the political and social background and intellectual environment, a textual analysis, and a description of its ideological tendencies, historical influence, and function in the canon.
