Molte sono state le cortigiane nella storia del Regno di Francia ma Mme De Pompadour è senz’altro la più famosa di tutte. Questa è un biografia affascinante e divertente su una donna eccezionale che esercitò una grandissima influenza sul Re, Luigi XV, riuscendo a mantenere incontrastato il suo potere per molti anni. Era temuta, odiata, amata e rispettata ma sicuramente ha sempre suscitato sentimenti forti ed è rimasta una donna memorabile. La Mitford riesce a raccontare episodi storici con precisione e umorismo e la quotidianità presso la corte di Versailles prende vita. Una storia intrigante sulla natura del potere - come conquistarlo e come conservarlo - piena anche di sfiziose curiosità e pettegolezzi dell’epoca. Pochi sanno forse che Mme De Pompadour è stata anche la fondatrice dell’Ecole Militaire e della maison di porcellana forse più famosa al mondo, le porcellane di Sevrès. Una donna che è arrivata molto in alto ma che ha dovuto anche, sembrerà strano, faticare molto.
