Dutta (communication, Purdue U.) presents a study of how otherwise silenced populations are finding new ways through collective action, social media, and cultures of resistance to express their discontent. She examines communicative processes, practices and frameworks from around the world where people have been rising up against neoliberalism, while offering alternative rationalities that include mechanisms for social change. She looks at the Arab Spring, the Occupy movement, struggles against the XL pipeline, struggles against Monsanto in the global south, and more. She makes extensive use of ordinary activists' own expressions and that of the para-activists commenting from the sidelines. She is mindful of her role as an academic writing about hitherto silenced masses and engages in her own struggle to co-construct meaning with them.
