Pliny the Elder is remembered as a prolific writer who died investigating the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 25, 79. Probably in about 107 or early 108, his nephew, a prolific letter writer called Pliny the Younger, was asked by his friend the historian Tacitus to describe the death of his famous uncle to insert into a history of Rome. That part of the history is lost, but the two letters remain. Renowned book illustrator Barry Moser presents a translation of them along with a description of the eruption and brief biographies of the principals, and dramatic wood block prints.
