This slim volume explores the life of Céleste Vénard, a prostitute whose writings about her rise from a cruel childhood as a registered courtesan in Paris to become the Countess de Chabrillan provide a window into the life of a nineteenth century sex worker. Chabrillan wrote two memoirs and several novels and plays that form the basis for Mossman's (French, U. of Maryland) analysis of her personal and social rehabilitation through self expression.
