.Anthropology is a kind of lens, bringing focus and clarity to human diversity.. #lensofanthropology

This is the opening line (in the form of a tweet) of Through the Lens of Anthropology—a new introductory textbook that provides a comprehensive but manageable approach to teaching anthropology. This highly accessible book uses the twin themes of food and sustainability to illustrate the connected nature of anthropology's four major subfields—archaeology, physical, cultural, and linguistic—as well as to demonstrate the relevance of anthropology to students' everyday lives. By viewing the world through the lens of anthropology, students will learn not only about anthropological methods, theories, and ethics, but also about the way anthropology is embedded in the culture that surrounds them.

Each chapter of the book opens with a tweet—a nod to social media, but also a device that models succinct and effective summarizing. Textboxes highlight the themes of food and sustainability (from paleo diets to garbology) to include topics of popular interest. As well, each chapter includes a list of learning objectives, glossary terms, chapter summaries, and questions to guide students' reading and provide framework for thinking about the issues covered.
